What Is Stage Fright?
Stage fright is not the fear of a stage as the name would imply. It is usually a fear of how others will judge our performance and perhaps even judge us as individuals. It can start minutes, hours, or days before that important performance. The doubts start to occupy your thoughts and your body feels the tension and fear. You may notice an increase in your heart rate, sweaty palms, shaky hands, dry throat, and you know the rest.
At this point many people trying to be helpful will tell you to relax and think about something else. While well meaning, these words of advice are little help in your moment of panic. If anything, they might just intensify your feeling that you are not in control of your feelings.
Even some of the greatest entertainers have confessed to experiencing Stage Fright. Rocks stars, singers, actors, actresses, dancers, performers of all kinds look upon Stage Fright as a powerful monster that can derail a promising career. But it doesn't have to be. You can learn to overcome it.
Top performers overcome Stage Fright and go on to develop their stage presence and star quality. They recognized the importance of overcoming stage fright in the pursuit of their dreams. Just like getting a voice, dance, music, or acting coach they sought out professional help in overcoming Stage Fright. Most were surprised to find out how much stage fright had been interfering with their performances on stage. Think of how it might be interfering with yours.
The good news is that with proper training, you can learn to overcome the stress symptoms
(the shaky hands, dry throat, etc.) and actually use the energy of the stress to improve your performance. Think of how good it will feel. Your confidence will soar and you can perform to your full potential.
