HOW TO HELP YOUR OVERWEIGHT CHILD:
- Do not use food as a reward or as a form of comfort.
- Have regular meals.
- Keep a good variety of healthy foods available for snacks.
- Set a good example.
- Do not treat the overweight child differently from the other family members.
- Be enthusiastic about eating a variety of foods.
- Introduce new foods gradually.
- Plan and provide regular meals and snacks for the family.
- Serve realistic portions - have dietitian work out some real life examples.
- Buy fewer high-calorie, low-nutrient foods.
- Involve children in planning, shopping, and label-reading.
- Avoid making nagging comments about a child's weight.
- Encourage family involvement in regular physical activity.
- Monitor time spent in front of the T.V., computer, or video game console.
- Respect your child's appetite: children do not need to finish every bottle or meal.
- Avoid pre-prepared and sugared foods when possible.
- Provide a healthy diet, with 30 percent or fewer calories derived from fat.
- Encourage active play.
- Establish regular family activities such as walks, ball games and other outdoor activities.
- Set a positive example by being a good role model.
